Week 13 Preview

Worthington, Ohio---Feel lucky? August and Week 13 have arrived on the NTPA calendar, and with them both longstanding traditional events and a couple of exciting new locales for Regional and Grand National events.

On Tuesday, August 1, the Cass County Fair Nationals in Cassopolis, Michigan will bring to the line Super Farms, Two Wheel Drives (West), Modified Minis, and a Wolverine Super Stock Combo class starting at 7 p.m. Regional leaders in each division are Stan Warda ("Hammerin' Hank" SF, +11), Randy Petro ("Vintage Kathy's Komplaint" TWD, +2), and David Lacey ("Triple Play Unchained" MINI, +5).

Then the Preble County Fair in Eaton, Ohio entertains the Minis and western Two Wheelers alongside Light Pro Stocks (West) and StainlessDiesel.com Pro Stock Diesel 4x4 3.0s at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 2. Going into that event, Mike Palmer and both his "Red Avenger" and "Red Avenger Classic" (-13) top the western Light Pros after a wild weekend at Fort Recovery, while Rob Wright's "All Attitude" (+3) is riding high after a win at Arcola.

The Grand National schedule has exciting four-day, five-event weekend beginning Thursday, August 3 in Monroe, Michigan. There, GN Open Super Stocks, Four Wheel Drives, and Multi-Engine Modifieds are joined by Super Farms and western Light Pros. The Opens haven't turned a wheel since Tomah, but their schedule picks up considerably with six more hooks in the season's waning weeks. Josh Blackbourn and "International Threat" (+3) will try to hold off the rest of the field. Carmen Foster will attempt the same with her "Foster Child" (+3) with a 10-hook race remaining in front of the Four Wheelers. And the Modifieds, idle as a division since Rockwell (though many were busy with several Unlimited hooks since then), will enter Monroe led by Ricky Rose's "Giddy Up" (+2).

A day later, Mason, Michigan's Ingham County Fair hosts its first NTPA national event. Scheduled to appear are Region II Super Farms, Four Wheel Drives, Minis, and Modifieds. Steve Elchinger's "Jus' Passin' Thru" (+4) leads the doorslammers, while Ryan Writsel's "Lucky Stryke" is first among the noise boys.

Also on Friday, August 4, attention turns westward and southward. First, the Western Illinois Grand Nationals in Mount Sterling, Illinois will feature GN Pro Stocks. Super Stock Diesel 4x4s, and Unlimiteds along with an Illinois Tractor Pullers Association class of Limited Pro Stocks. GN division leaders are Mike Conny and "MAC Nasty" (PS, +7) back on top after after Brandenburg, and Josh Deeter's "Up in Smoke" (SSD 4x4, +9) and Chuck Knapp's "Screamin' D" (UNL, +16), comfortably in front after Fort Recovery.

And the Elizabeth City 300 at Morgan's Corner Pulling Park in Elizabeth City, North Carolina has its new midsummer dates on Friday and Saturday, August 4 and 5. The three Region IV classes---Light Pros, Two Wheel Drives, and Four Wheel Drives---will each determine their Enderle representatives, and the truck classes will crown champs. Ron Beasley's "Farmall Fever" (+1) is up in Light Pros after winning in Virginia. Steve Willson ("Running Bear" TWD, +1) was the best across Millers Tavern and Pinetops, as were co-leaders John T. Davis' "The Legend" and Kevin Schools' "Jus' Rutt'n" (+4).

Saturday, August 5 also finds Grand National action in Ohio, Illinois, and Michigan. Wapakoneta, Ohio's RRR Tire Moon City Nationals at the Auglaize County Fair has GN Super Stock Diesels, Two Wheel Drives and Modifieds, plus Light Pros (West) at 6 p.m. sharp. Coming off a rare two-week layoff, Travis Schlabach and "Bone Twister" (+5) lead the diesels, while Renee Theobald's "Pretty Wicked" and Randy Petro's "Kathy's Komplaint" (+5) are tied atop TWD coming back from Kentucky.

Salem, Illinois' Marion County Fair NTPA Grand Nationals teams Open Supers and Pro Stocks with the SSD 4x4s at 7 p.m. And the Celebration on the Pond in Morley, Michigan has GN Super Semis as well as Region II Super Farms and Minis. Dean Holicky and "Mother Trucker" (+2) are atop the Semi standings.

On Sunday, for the first time in over two decades, the NTPA will invade the Empire State for a two-session, three-division Grand National event at the Langford Tractor Pull Grounds in Langford, New York. Coming a day after the Down-Home Country Jamboree and Concert, the event is a smorgasbord of pulling, with NTPA sessions of Light Super Stocks, Four Wheel Drives, and Minis at noon and 6 p.m. sandwiching ESP classes and preceding a PPL class of Light Limited Super Stocks. Home-stater Jason Hootman and "The Commander" (+1) will arrive leading the Lights, while the Minis are paced by the "Bobcat Jr." Team (+7).

Then on Monday, our week of new frontiers and old stomping grounds concludes in epicentric Ohio and the home of the Enderle Pull-Off, the Champaign County Fair Pull in Urbana, Ohio. On the card are Pro Stocks, Light Pro Stocks (East), Super Stock Diesel 4x4s, and Modifieds. The Heavy Pros are co-led by Jason Svonavec's "Bootlegger" and Ryan Walters' "Chasin' Tail" (+4) with four hooks to go. Meanwhile the diesel pickups are co-led by Cody Hastings' "Against the Grain" and Susan Ingram's "Scheid Diesel," though they have yet to appear at a pull together. Only a single hook in Findlay remains on their list.

In Week 14, the schedules lighten but the races tighten, with just two GN events and two RN events in the run-up to Bowling Green. We'll see you then.
