State Center, Iowa
Doug Lively won his third Grand National Modified championship in 2018. “Bank Robber” won back-to-back championships in 2013 and 2014. Doug and his wife Nancy “work on this thing tirelessly. She is very good mechanically. We use it as a way to get away from the farm.”
Doug added, “This was definitely the most hard-fought championship. The back two motors were upset all summer. We had a spare on for over half the season.
“The field is really tight, you have to be on your game to get ahead of these guys.”
Doug started the season with a fourth-place finish at the Showdown in Curdtown event in Ellsworth, Wisconsin. He followed that up with a pair of runner-up finishes at the Budweiser Dairyland Super Nationals, once to the 2017 champion Ricky Rose and “Giddy Up” and once to three-time titlist Bret Berg and “Money Maker.”
The next four hooks were all in his home state of Iowa on consecutive weekends. In Rockwell, he parked the “Bank Robber” in fourth in Session One and third in Session Two. The first session of New Hampton’s Kenwood Avenue Nationals was rained out, and Doug finished second on Saturday night to maintain a two-point lead. A week and a half later, he finished fifth in Monroe, Michigan and fell two points behind the winner, Berg, in the process.
The Norwalk, Wisconsin Lions Club event features two hooks in one day. Doug won the afternoon session and finished second to Berg in the evening to take a points lead that he would not relinquish. Modifieds were among the classes lost in Bowling Green’s Friday night rainout, and then Doug pulled “Bank Robber” to victory on Saturday afternoon to build an eight-point lead with just two hooks remaining in DeKalb County.
Doug stated, “Sandwich, Illinois was a struggle. We did not have the right setup for Sandwich.” Still, “Bank Robber” finished sixth in the afternoon and clinched the championship with a fifth place in the nightcap.
Doug would like to acknowledge Alliance Tire, Independent Ag, Cen-Pe-Co, Case IH, and MAC Trailer. He also wanted to thank his wife Nancy, son Tyler, Brad Wycoff, Mark Kinser from Kinser Racing Engines, Brian Knox from Sassy Racing Engines, and Ken Wright (Hawkeye Hustler), who did a lot of chassis work on the tractor this year.
