Worthington, Ohio---The C-Bar-C Expo Center in Cloverdale, Indiana, renowned throughout the Midwest for hosting first-class equine and livestock events, housed a different kind of horsepower on a recent mid-January weekend.
The fourth annual NTPA Winter Nationals presented by Bane-Welker Equipment, Inc. on Friday and Saturday, January 19 and 20, included 13 classes of competition among seven divisions regularly featured on the National Tractor Pullers Association's Championship Pulling Circuit. Located about halfway between Indianapolis and Terre Haute, the massive C-Bar-C facility accommodates a 320' regulation-length track as well as crowd seating, competitor pit, vendor, and exhibitor areas under one roof and provides fans with an experience unmatched by any other indoor pulling venue.
In truck and tractor pulling, vehicles drag a 20-ton weight transfer sled along a straight, dirt track as resistance increases. The NTPA is the world's number-one sanctioning organization for premier-level events that feature highly specialized machines resembling farm tractors, trucks, and dragsters and dedicated competitors who battle for purse money and end-of-season championships. Competing at Cloverdale were diesel tractors from the multi-turbocharger Super Stock and single-turbocharger Pro Stock and Light Pro Stock divisions, diesel Four-Wheel-Drive and Super Semi Trucks, alcohol-fueled Two- and Four-Wheel-Drive Trucks, and supercharged Modified Minis weighing in at just 2,050 lbs.
Competition was by invitation only, and while some were selected by virtue of their proximity to the Expo, most qualifiers were determined by their end-of-season placing in NTPA Grand or Regional National points. Indeed, the event's impressive roster included seven reigning national champions, among whom were all four regional champions from the Light Pro Stock division. Eighty-four entries hailed from 16 states (including 24 drivers from Indiana and four from Illinois), the Canadian province of New Brunswick, and the Netherlands.
Victorious at the 2018 NTPA Winter Nationals on Friday night were Kent Crowder of Attica, Indiana ("Scheid Diesel" Dodge Super Stock Diesel 4x4), Adam Bauer of Paton, Iowa ("Cowboy Up" Modified Mini) and Mark Wiederhold of Clarksville, Ohio ("Bare Necessities" John Deere Light Pro Stock). Wiederhold held the distinction of posting the longest distance of the weekend at over 328'.
Saturday afternoon's winners were Mark Lawyer of New Castle, Indiana ("Rapped Up with a Vengeance" John Deere Pro Stock), Larry Peterson of Baldwin, Wisconsin ("Profab Geared Up" Chevrolet Four Wheel Drive), Bauer, and Randy Petro of Camden, Ohio ("Kathy's Komplaint" Ford Two Wheel Drive). Lawyer won again on Saturday night along with Kevin Smith of Alvada, Ohio ("Flirtin' with Deerezaster" John Deere Light Pro), Carl Atley of Xenia, Ohio ("Lethal Weapon" Ford Diesel 4x4), and Travis Schlabach of Marengo, Iowa ("Bone Twister" International Super Stock Diesel). A unique C-Bar-C trophy---an engraved belt buckle---was awarded to each class winner along with Sonny Graese of Crivitz, Wisconsin, whose "Stacks" Kenworth edged Peru, Indiana's W.T. Miller for total distance pulled across their two Super Semi exhibition hooks.
