Worthington, Ohio---Hearing those cicadas yet? Noticing the sun's angle getting a little lower, the daylight getting a little shorter? The calendar is about to flip to summer's last full month, and with it begins the home stretch of the NTPA's Championship Pulling schedule.
On Tuesday, July 31, the Cass County Fair Nationals in Cassopolis, Michigan hosts three Region II divisions---Super Farm Tractors, StainlessDiesel.com Western Pro Stock Diesel 4x4 3.0 Trucks, and Modified Minis---and one Super Stock Combo state class, starting at 7 p.m. Incoming regional leaders are Charlie Capozzo of Richmond, Michigan ("Cruel Intention" SF), Adam Hallien of Fort Wayne, Indiana ("Wrecker" PSD 4x4-W), and David Lacey of Thedford, Ontario ("Triple Play: Double or Nothing" MINI).
Then on Wednesday, August 1 at 7 p.m., the NTPA makes a return trip to Eaton, Ohio for the Preble County Fair Pull. The Western 3.0s are joined by Western Light Pro Stocks and Two Wheel Drives as well as Modifieds. Topping the charts going in are Wes Spencer of Greenville, Ohio ("Bush Wacker" LT PS-W), Randy Petro of Camden, Ohio ("Vintage Kathy's Komplaint" TWD-W), and Ryan Writsel of Orient, Ohio ("Lucky Stryke" MOD).
Grand National action resumes in Monroe, Michigan on Thursday, August 2. Super Stock Opens, Four Wheel Drives, and Modifieds get a hook, as do Region II Super Farms and Eastern subregional Light Pros. The first green flag drops at 7 p.m. In the proverbial catbird seat are John Strickland of Clinton, North Carolina ("GALOT II" SSO), Carmen Foster of Fairgrove, Michigan ("Foster Child" FWD), Doug Lively of State Center, Iowa ("Bank Robber" MOD), and Scott Webb of Beverly, Ohio ("Ragin' Red" LT PS-E).
The Super Farms will move on to Mason, Michigan and the Ingham County Fair Nationals and will meet up with Four Wheelers, Minis, and Modifieds at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 3. On top of the mountain in FWD is Steve Elchinger of Holgate, Ohio and his Chevrolet, "Jus' Passin' Thru."
At that same time, Mount Sterling, Illinois' Brown County Fair will present the Western Illinois Grand Nationals on Friday, August 3 with a revamped class lineup: Light Unlimiteds and Two Wheel Drives will team with Pro Stock Tractors and Super Stock Diesel 4x4 Trucks as well as Illinois Tractor Pullers' Association Limited Pro Stocks. And on Saturday, August 4, the GN circuit breaks into four squads and spreads out to Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, and New York. The Bremer County Fair, situated in Waverly, Iowa, gets Light Unlimiteds and Two Wheelers alongside Region V Super Farms and Limited Pro Stocks, the last of whose leaders are Rod Deck of Winside, Nebraska ("Dream On" SF) and the Figanbaum/Vsetecka Team ("Instigator" LIM PS).
The Marion County Fair Grand Nationals in Salem, Illinois will see Open Supers, Pro Stocks, and SSD 4x4s at 7 p.m.
The Celebration on the Pond in Morley, Michigan will welcome Super Semis as well as Region II Super Farms and Minis. Dean Holicky of Montgomery, Minnesota leads the big rigs by seven points with his "Mother Trucker" Peterbilt.
And the Northeast Nationals in Langford, New York has two daytime sessions on Saturday at 2 p.m. and again on Sunday, August 5 at noon. Both will feature Light Super Stocks, Super Stock Diesels, Four Wheel Drives, and Mini and Multi-Engine Unlimited Modifieds. Both will also include Empire State Pullers classes, and Semis and Western New York Pro Pulling Series will complete the program on Sunday. Atop the GN standings are Brian Korth of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin ("Excessive Force" LSS), Stan and Steve Blagrave of Ackerly, Texas ("Red Horse" SSD), Joe Eder of North Collins, New York ("Polar Air" MINI), and Chuck Knapp of Charles City, Iowa ("Screamin' D" UNL). If you can't make it to New York, bring all the noise, smoke, and power to your living room with the NTPA Live Stream at WatchNTPA.com.
Finally, for the 10th of this week's 10 events, the NTPA comes home to Urbana, Ohio. The site of the Enderle Memorial Pull-Off in only six weeks' time, the Champaign County Fairgrounds first hosts its fair pull on Monday, August 6 at 7:30 p.m. with five regional classes: Light Supers, Pro Stocks, Eastern Light Pros, Super Stock Diesel 4x4s, and Modifieds. Jason Irvin's "Drunkin' Punkin" LSS from Brookville, Ohio and Susan Ingram's "Scheid Diesel" SSD 4x4 from Farina, Illinois lead their respective divisions by a single point, while the Whitney/Aller Team's "Ground Force" of St. Marys, Ohio tops the Pro Stocks.
A four-day break follows this hectic week before the GN trail picks up again in Sandusky and Napoleon, Ohio and Norwalk, Wisconsin. We'll remind you of what you know and catch you up on what you missed in this very space before then. Thanks for reading.
