Worthington, Ohio---It’ll be a mix of familiar and fresh at the 49th NTPA Convention and Awards Banquet.
Longtime attendees will know the venue, as the highly anticipated event has moved back to the Marriott Columbus Northwest in Dublin, Ohio, just south of the intersection of the Interstate 270 outerbelt and U.S. 33. The hotel is easily accessible from Tuttle Crossing Boulevard, which also borders the eponymous shopping mall and several shops and restaurants.
Aside from last year’s transplant to the north side of the capital city’s metro area, the Marriott has been the home of the year-end celebration for over a decade. Attendees who have been away from the festivities for a few years will return to find a comprehensively remodeled facility. (Renovations were in their final stages at the time of the 2017 banquet.)
Those accustomed to the annual routine had better regularly consult their pamphlets, though, as they’ll find changes both minor and major.
“We’ve done a complete re-thinking of the program for this year,” began Gregg Randall, NTPA General Manager. “We know the facility so well and are comfortable with the folks at the Marriott and their eagerness to accommodate us. So the WPI office staff and I believed this was the time to take a shot at streamlining both the schedule and the awards ceremony.
“Moreover,” Randall continued, “the NTPA Executive Board’s decision to migrate the membership’s Annual Meeting to Enderle weekend—acclaimed by all as a complete success, by the way—freed up some hours on Friday. That got the ball rolling, and we took it from there.”
To take advantage of that reservoir of time, the Entry Clerk (1 p.m.) and Tech Official (2:15 p.m.) Schools no longer overlap. This adjustment encourages members of each group to attend the others’ school, which should lead to a better understanding and appreciation by all of the vital work with which the Association’s field personnel are tasked.
A glance at Saturday’s lineup reveals the consolidation of the former Promoters’ Workshop and Competitors’ Seminar into one pre-banquet presentation. Now christened the “2020 NTPA Championship Pulling Seminar” (10 a.m.), the wide-ranging, two-hour workshop will highlight projects, plans, and programs that include everything from the new-in-2019 online ticketing service to pre-show track preparation.
The common thread that connects the topics: What factors lead to the success of Association events as viewed from the perspectives of their stakeholders: promoters, competitors, and spectators. Hence, members of all of these groups are invited to attend and discover what makes NTPA pulling tick.
Early arrivers are also welcome to sit in on the National Programs Meeting at which the tentative 2020 schedule will be revealed. In fact, for $15, you can reserve a plate for the NTPA Appreciation Breakfast; that meal is served from 8 to 9:30 a.m.
Then, on Saturday night, $50 buys a ticket to the scrumptious banquet and subsequent Awards Program; the proceedings of which will also be reorganized.
“While by no means finalized,” Randall offered, “the sequence we have in mind will quicken the pace while still giving all of the champions, top finishers, and special award winners in attendance their due.”
“We sincerely hope the changes lead to both more efficiency in the delivery of critical information throughout the weekend and increased enjoyment by our banquet guests.”
