Ellis Seals Grand National Four Wheel Drive Championship with Wauseon Victory

2018 UNL FWD Ellis Champ

Worthington, Ohio---A strong finish, a good hook, a smart decision...and then a long wait.

That describes the sequence of events that culminated at the M.E. Miller Tire Tri-State Showdown in the first National Tractor Pullers Association Grand National championship for Ben Ellis of Champlain, Virginia. After emerging in 2017 as a consistent threat on the national level after claiming the Shell Rotella Cup Series title over six hooks, Ellis made all 15 of the trucks' appearances in 2018 and scored three victories---Hutchinson, Minnesota; Langford, New York; and the clincher in Wauseon, Ohio---and nine top-fives. His title is the second straight (Peyton Davis, "Punisher") for a native of Virginia, the epicenter of the division in its mid-1970s formative years.

Leading for much of the season and finishing second was Carmen Foster with "Foster Child" (-2). After her dad Rob won in Hutchinson, Foster maintained the team's momentum with a victory in Tomah, Wisconsin's Session Four over a field of 35. She then took first again in home-state Monroe, Michigan to open August and placed second twice in Norwalk, Wisconsin to establish a 17-point lead over Ellis. But across two huge classes and two tough tracks in Bowling Green, Ohio---where Ellis finished 12th and second, Foster 25th and 13th---that advantage shrank to just two.

Friday night in Fulton County, Ellis accepted his test hook of 320.2' and watched 17 competitors fall short of that mark. The third to do so was Foster, whose 308.2' was good for third place at the time. She maintained that position---which, by virtue of a tiebreaker advantage, would have clinched the title for her---for an agonizing 12 trucks before hometown legend Jim Holman and "4 Play" (-18) bumped her to fourth behind "Benjammin." Larry Peterson and "Profab Geared Up" (-26) subsequently dropped her to fifth and established Ellis' final margin of victory. Tyler Cobb's "Bandit" (-39) placed 10th to clinch the fifth berth in the 32nd annual Enderle Memorial Pull-Off on Saturday, September 15 in Urbana, Ohio.
