Russ Nichols (Lore City, Ohio)
"On the Edge"
2019 NTPA Grand National Two Wheel Drive Champion
"A dream season." That's how competitor Bryan McDonald described the 2019 of Russ Nichols, whose "On the Edge" Ford had seven top-fives in 10 appearances and finished nine points up on good friend McDonald's "Suffering Sanity" when the penny dropped in Bowling Green. After winning the opener in Benson, Nichols trailed McDonald after only Tomah and the first hook in Hagerstown but regained the lead with a second in "Hub City" and a first in Ionia. A third victory in Brandenburg pushed his lead to nine, but McDonald trimmed it to just two on Thursday night in BG before giving those points back on Saturday afternoon. "Sanity" claimed the Shell Rotella Cup, while defending and five-time champion Randy Petro's "Kathy's Komplaint" (-13) won the final hook to score Petro Motorsports' lone GN victory of the season. Roger Simon's "Simon Sez Chevy" (-27) and Renee Theobald's "Pretty Wicked" (-38) completed the top five.
