"Iron Toy" Claims Fourth Modified Mini Title in 10 Seasons; Bauer Goes One-Three in Division

2018 UNL Mini Champ

Worthington, Ohio---Adam Bauer of Paton, Iowa has claimed his 10th Grand National title across four divisions and his fifth in the National Tractor Pullers Association's Modified Mini class. His "Iron Toy" has now captured four championships, tying it with Lee Swift's "Mr. Thundermaker" (2002-2005) for the most since the division's weight reached 2,000 lbs. in 2002.

"Cowboy Up" (-14) finished third in the 2018 standings, and Bauer's two vehicles combined for six wins and 23 top-fives in 36 total appearances. While the season began well for both tractors in Benson, North Carolina (two thirds for "Toy" and a win for "Cowboy") and Hutchinson, Minnesota (another "Cowboy" win), it was the dominance demonstrated at the pull nearest Bauer's home, the North Iowa Nationals in Rockwell, that relegated the rest of the division's  contenders to the pursuit of silver or bronze. Bauer took the top two spots on both nights in large pull-offs; his eight runs amounted to 2,897'.

Adam Koester's 2016 title-winning "Walk the Line" (-13) drew closest to Bauer in the closing week with a win in Wellington, Ohio, while Joe Eder's "Polar Air" (-28) scored eight top-fives in their first year together. And Koester's "Beast of Burden" (-49) won twice to take the final berth among five---which were claimed by only three drivers---in the 32nd Enderle Memorial Pull-Off on Saturday, September 15 in Urbana, Ohio.

Along with Scott Walker, Bauer drove "Cowboy Up" for much of the 2012 season and has been its lone pilot since. Bauer's other championships have been accomplished with "Cross Threaded" (Modified, 2010; Unlimited, 2013-2014) and "Double-Nutted" (Light Unlimited, 2012-2013). Having earned one for the thumb now in Minis, Bauer has matched Phillip Fairbanks (2010, 2000, 1994-1996) and Charles Hoppert (1978, 1977 x 2, 1975-1976) for the third-most all-time in the division; Fairbanks was also in the seat for a victory with last season's champion "Bobcat Jr." Dennis Horst's "Red Fox" (1997-1999, 1991-1992, 1984) and Johnny Mello (1990, 1985, 1983 x 2, 1982 x 2) have six season titles apiece.
