Story by Darren Heartwell
The 2017 season was historic for Joshua Deeter and the entire Super Stock Diesel Four Wheel Drive class, as it was their first year at the Grand National level. Deeter commented, “It’s great to be the first Grand National champion for our class! It’s awesome! It’s a big deal, an accomplishment!”
Deeter started his pulling career with a stock truck for a couple of seasons, pulling the 3.0 diesel class for two years. He moved into the SSD 4x4 class three years ago.
The first hook of the year was rained out at the Budweiser Dairyland Super Nationals in Tomah, Wisconsin. Josh finished second on Friday afternoon. He earned his first victory at the next hook in Fort Recovery, Ohio and finished second there on Saturday evening to take a points lead that he would not surrender for the rest of the season.
He won again in Mount Sterling, Illinois to open up a 12-point lead before ending up sixth the next night at the Marion County Grand Nationals in Salem, Illinois.
Deeter parked “Up in Smoke” in fourth place on Friday afternoon at the National Tractor Pulling Championships in Bowling Green, Ohio. On Saturday evening, he finished 12th, the only time all season he was outside the top 10.
He finished sixth in Greenville, Ohio to take a nine-point lead into the final hook of the season in Sandwich, Illinois. “I knew I had to be in the top eight (to win the championship). I pulled into the lead with only two trucks left.” He ultimately finished second.
Deeter added, “Being the Grand National Champion was the highlight of the season. I was the most consistent all season; that’s how you win the championship.
“Carl Atley has been a good mentor. He taught me a lot of what I know today.”
Joshua would like to thank his wife Kelly Deeter, his mom and dad, brother Brad (who pulls a SSD 4x4, too: “Oversize Load”), the whole SSD 4x4 class including Shawn Hodges, Carl Atley, and Kent Crowder. Josh also thanked his sponsor, Deeter Farms Construction; Scheid Diesel; Nichols Tire; Kevin Campbell at Chaos Fabrication; Mark MacGyver at Schaefer’s Oil; his pulling family; and all of the fans. “If we didn’t have fans, we couldn’t do this!”
