Rarified "Air": Eder Claims Third NTPA Grand National Title with Seven-Win Season

Joe Eder (North Collins, New York)

"Polar Air: 75th Edition"

2019 NTPA Grand National Unlimited Champion

Since August 2018, when Joe Eder piloted his four-engine Unlimited to its first victory at the Langford Pull Grounds situated within the Buffalo snowbelt, the sport's weather watchers could see it coming: The "Polar" Vortex. Eder won only once more in Wellington that year to finish sixth in the standings behind four-time champion Chuck Knapp's "Screamin' D." But when the 2019 season dawned, Eder's "Polar Air: 75th Edition" wasted little time getting acclimated. A second and third in Tomah were followed by a blizzard of wins across six of the next seven contests that buried Knapp (-25) and fellow championship contender Wayne Purser's "Uncle Sam" (-21) in a double-digit snowbank. Hard-earned top fives also went to Ricky Rose's "Giddy Up" (-92), which fought mechanical issues for much of the season, and Kevin Criswell's late-starting, hot-finishing "Blown Centless" (-131). The title is Eder's third with the Association including 1997 and 2003 crowns in the 7,200-lb. and 7,500-lb. Modified divisions, respectively.
