In 2016, Writsel won the Eastern Enderle berth; in 2017, he repeated the feat but as the new subregion’s champion. Writsel dominated with six wins—three of the first four in Marion, Wilmington, and Lebanon; three of the last four in Fremont, Findlay, and Old Washington— and all top fives. The only other competitor to make all 11 hooks, Howard Antram won on a stormy night in Canton with “Thunder Wagon II.” The Shephards’ vintage Chevy also valiantly fought Writsel’s classic Ford until late-season engine failures proved too much to overcome. Two of the circuit’s pedigreed trucks, Joe Schoenemann’s “Should’a Said No” and Ralph Hunt’s “Yellow Thunder,” rounded out the top five, the latter with two wins.
