Bud Jaske | 2004

Bud Jaske’s career in pulling started on a dare. That’s right - a dare. Little did the New Berlin, Wisconsin native know that this “dare” would result into an induction to the NTPA Pulling Hall of Fame three decades later. 1976 was the first year in which Bud Jaske pulling in NTPA competition with his Four Wheel Drive Truck called the “Blue Ox”. “I knew a guy who had a 427 Chevy V-8 prepped for drag racing,” said Jaske in an August 1986 Puller magazine interview. “We bought it and put it in a 1975 International Harvester pickup.” The familiar blue truck was around for some of the first NTPA pulling of the Four Wheel Drive Truck division in the mid-70s. Jaske, who has a true love for competition, had two motors built in 1981 - one fuel injected and one supercharged - so that he could switch back and forth between the injected class and the newly formed blown class. As time progressed into the ‘80s with the sport, so did the expenses. Bud Jaske knew that corporate sponsorship was in other motorsports, so why not pulling? So through a neighbor’s connection, Jaske was able to strike a deal with the Miller Brewing Company, sporting the “Meister Brau” colors. Bud recalled, “We were their first pulling venture, we had to educate them about the sport - and they educated us. It was a good arrangement for both sides.” With the sponsorship, Bud renamed the “Blue Ox” to “Golden Ox” to match their new color scheme, and expanded their pulling schedule to 90 events a year for exposure. Bud’s son, Steve, also competed with the “Blazing Bison” Modified as the two paired up. The Jaskes were successful on the track, particularly with Bud’s FWD Truck as he won virtually every significant pulling event imaginable. With the sponsorship, Bud was now able to make all of the NTPA summer events, and sought an NTPA Grand National title in 1986. Three years later, Jaske had amassed four titles to be exact with the “Golden Ox” - winning the 5800 lb. point class in 1986 and 1988, and winning both the 5800 and 6200 lbs. point classes in 1987. Bud was voted “Puller of the Year” in 1998 and also his family received “Pulling Family of the Year”. As Bud Jaske rolled into the 1990s, the “Meister Brau” colors were replaced with the “Miller High Life” theme and the Jaskes added a TWD Truck to the stable of pulling vehicles. A runner-up in the point standings in 1990 to the Holman Brothers was the last serious chase Bud Jaske made towards an NTPA FWD points title. Other areas in life were calling the family besides pulling. In 1999, Puller magazine readers voted Bud Jaske as one of the top performers in NTPA FWD Truck history.
