It would be very difficult to write the history of the NTPA without mentioning the name of David F. Grimm. After graduating from the College of Agriculture and Home Economics at the Ohio State University, majoring in Agriculture Journalism, the Ohio native spent time as Farm Director at WRFD Radio in Columbus before joining the NTPA Office. Grimm met with Ed Hart, who was one of the founding members of NTPA. That interview took place in Upper Sandusky, Ohio - NTPA's first home, in the basement of Ed's home, which in fact was NTPA's first office. Grimm’s was introduced to the readers of The Pullermagazine in November of 1973 as directing their publications and handling public relations. Each month for the next year, Grimm’s “Off The Track” column focused on what was occurring behind-the-scenes which, unknowingly to Grimm at the time, penned much of the early history of the young association during 1973 and 1974. By interjecting opinion with fact in a masterful way, one could see that Grimm had great vision for the future of truck and tractor pulling. Whether it dealt with safety, competition rules, methods of marketing, or pointing out the positive, important aspects of the sport, Grimm was always ahead of the times. Dave Grimm also had a gift with the microphone, aptly serving as an event announcer at NTPA events throughout the country as well as appearing in a pulling TV shows. Grimm’s first stint with the company was short lived however, as military commitments forced him from the company. Grimm’s name re-appeared in The Puller once again in February of 1977 when he was hired as NTPA’s executive director. Grimm’s seven year stint during this period could be surmised with one word - growth. Grimm found himself involved in the sanctioning and sponsorship angles of the business during these important years. Because the sport was still relatively young, sanctioning of events was growing and sponsorship money was coming NTPA's way. This included sponsorship from the Anheauser Busch corporation and then Wrangler Jeans in December of 1982. Wrangler was first major circuit sponsors known to pulling. Other projects that were vastly successful and still impact the NTPA today included developing the NTPA Scoreboard, developing publicity materials to assist in the sanctioning of events, developing a successful contingency program, and fostering the Two Wheel Drive Truck division into existence. In February of 1984 when Dave Grimm stepped away from his position at the NTPA to pursue other interest, it marked the longest tenure of anyone holding the executive director position. In 1989, Grimm joined the Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction, VT as general manager. The fair is the fourth largest in New England and includes an NTPA Grand National event each Labor Day.
