John Strickland etched his name in the NTPA’s history books by earning his third consecutive championship. The Clinton, North Carolina native drove the “GALOT II” AGCO to three wins and never finished outside the top four.
The GALOT Motorsports Team is owned by Earl Wells. Brent Payne, the team’s crew chief and the driver of “GALOT,” stated, “Earl wanted to build a team, and you cannot ask for a better team. John is a great driver; [he] can read a track and is willing to take risks. Our goal is to keep one tractor consistent.”
The team started out the season at the event they promote, the Mule City 300 at GALOT Motorsports Park in Benson. They dominated both nights of the event, with John piloting “GALOT II” to victories and Brent finishing with two seconds with “GALOT.” Thursday’s first hook in Tomah was rained out before John finished fourth on Saturday afternoon to maintain the points lead. He finished fourth again at the Monroe County Fair in Monroe, Michigan. Combined with Payne’s third, it brought the teammates into a tie atop the standings.
Strickland earned third at Salem, Illinois’ Marion County Fair Grand Nationals the following Saturday to retake sole possession of the lead. Two weeks later, he finished second during the first hook at the National Tractor Pulling Championships before claiming his third win on Friday afternoon to take a four-point lead into the last hook. Strickland finished in the runner-up position at the Friday Night Spectacular in Wellington, Ohio to seize another championship. With Hurricane Florence bearing down on the Carolinas, both John and Earl had to miss the Enderle. Brent drove both tractors at the all-star invitational, won the team’s first Pull-Off with “GALOT II,” and finished second with “GALOT.”
John would like to thank Earl and Peggy Wells, the team’s owners and his father- and mother-in-law, as well as his wife Dana, son Holt, and daughter Janalee. He would also like to thank Brent Payne, his wife Lee and his children Annabelle, Johnny, and Jack. He also recognizes the crew at GMS: Joe Ferneding, Dennis Payne, Dan Lyons, Timmy Hettrich, Craig Gettinger, Andy Smith, Austin Engel, Kevin Hall, and Ted Grassmick. John added, “Brent does a great job working on our tractors and driving. He uses his tractor as a guinea pig.” The GALOT Team further acknowledges GMS, GALOT Motorsports, CM Pulling Tires, Humpco Machine, Keating Machine, HPS Cylinder Head, Cen-Pe-Co, and Rite Care/ Scottish Rite Masons: Helping Children Communicate---Speech, Language, and Literacy.
