Cindy Adkins, FWD Competitor, Has Passed

The WPI/NTPA office has been notified of the death on Friday, November 27 of Cindy Adkins, 63, of Statesville, North Carolina. Mrs. Adkins was a competitor in both gas and diesel Four-Wheel-Drive Truck divisions ("Green-Eyed Lady," "Mama's Grocery Get'r," "Pullin' for the Cure") and the wife of fellow puller Brent Adkins ("Sly, Slick & Wicked" MOD).

Mrs. Adkins' passing follows an inspirational, years-long battle against metastatic breast cancer,. Alongside Brent, she championed this cause publicly and in community projects and awareness efforts that coincided with her passion for running 5K races and crafting quilts and decorative items for others.

Mrs. Adkins was a graduate of West Rowan High School and Queens Business College in Charlotte. She and Mr. Adkins were members of Western Avenue Baptist Church.

For many years, Mrs. Adkins managed the family business, Professional Towing and Diesel, a wrecker service in Statesville. Husband and wife shared the driving duties of "Warrior" in the early '90s before adding the "Grocery Get'r" Dodge Caravan to their pulling stable for the balance of the decade. She moved on to the "Green-Eyed Lady" Dodge in 2001 and pulled it through 2005.

Mrs. Adkins posted three national victories in NTPA competition. All came in 2009 with her pink-ribboned Super Stock Diesel 4x4, which earned Cindy that summer's Region IV championship.

For her service on behalf of Iredell County's Hospice & Palliative Care, Mrs. Adkins received the 2017 Governor's Medallion Award, one of only 20 awarded each year to volunteers in the Tarheel State. Cindy was deeply involved in the hospice's Rainbow Kidz program, which provides counseling and care to children who struggle with the loss of loved ones.

Mrs. Adkins is survived by four children: Shelley (Michael) Houston, Emily (Tate) Little, Alex (Alison) Hege (Alison), and Courtney Hege (Caleb) Glenn; and seven grandchildren. Her full obituary may be found here.

Memorials may be made to Rainbow Kidz, care of of Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County; or to Molly's Kids of Molly Grantham WBTV.

We offer our deepest condolences to Brent and the Adkins family.
