Pro Stock Competitor Tom Harmon Has Passed

We are saddened to report the passing on Saturday, July 6 of Thomas Harmon, 71, of North Branch, Michigan. Mr. Harmon was a competitor in the Pro Stock division, most notably with the “Preparation H” International 966, and owned several other vehicles across a long pulling career.

Mr. Harmon’s pulling career began with a Case 110 garden tractor. By his teenage years, he had pulled full-size Cases, a 930 and a 1070, around a stint with a John Deere 4020, and all on concrete pads rather than dirt tracks.

Tom and his brother Tim eventually graduated to an twin-charged International 686 that pulled all four Super Stock weight breaks offered at the time: 5,500, 7,500, 9,500, and 12,000 lbs. To its stable was eventually added a 1066 called “Half-Cocked,” while the 686 was the first to bear the name “Preparation H” (which, in its owner’s words, meant “Prepared by Harmon”).

He acquired Randy Hinton’s “Red Rascal” in 1991. For a season, it was renamed “Squander Mania” and competed on the national and Wolverine circuits in both the 10,000-lb. and 12,000-lb. classes. But by ’92, the tractor was rebranded with the familiar “Preparation H” moniker (technically, “II”), and it and Mr. Harmon had a night to remember in Monroe, with a win in the 12 Pro and a second-place against the 7,500-lb. multi-charger Super Stocks. As a precommitted GN PS puller in 1997, he won again at the Michigan’s Finest Nationals and the very next week in Mount Sterling, Illinois en route to an eighth-place standings finish.

Mr. Harmon additionally served on the board of directors for the Wolverine Pullers member state organization. He was the owner of Harmon Oil & Propane and Cob-Ash Trucking.

He is survived by his wife Maria, son Gregory, daughters Erica (Jacinda Santora) and Molly (Renesha Reynolds), sister Claudia Jakubiak, brother Tim (Ellen), mother-in-law Victoria Rogers, and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Harmon’s funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday, July 16 at 10 a.m. at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 6645 Washington Street, North Branch, MI 48461.

A memorial cruise featuring his tractor and side-by-side is set for Saturday, September 21.

Mr. Harmon’s complete obituary may be found here, where memories and tributes may be shared with the family.

Our deepest sympathies rest with the Harmon and Rogers families on the occasion of their loss.
