What Is GN Select?

On its Schedule and online entry pages, the NTPA refers to several events and classes as “Grand National Select,” which is indicated symbolically with an asterisk (*).

This designation and symbol indicates that competitor entry into such an event is restricted in some way. That is, in addition to a full-year or provisional (“per-hook”) driver license/vehicle registration, there exists some other condition(s) that must be met before a competitor may participate.

Such requirements may include participation in the GN free-entry program, possession of a point standings position at or above a particular threshold as of a certain date, promoter invitation, or a combination thereof.

“Ideally, every event would be wide open and able to accept any puller who meets the competition and safety requirements for their chosen division,” said Gregg Randall, the NTPA’s Executive Director. “And we have several such events on our schedule. But the space limitations of certain sites and the circumstances of some facilities—county fairs, curfews, etc.—do not allow for an exceedingly long or heavily attended show.

“We believe GN Select is a fair compromise to allow those who are chasing a title or those with a special relationship with the event to know they can participate.”

The requirements may vary at different points of the season. For example, a vehicle may be entered into the GN Select Two-Wheel-Drive Truck classes at Farley, Iowa in June if and only if the vehicle is GN-registered. Meanwhile, the GN Select classes at Chapel Hill, Tennessee in July (SSD, PS, FWD, MINI, and UNL) and at Napoleon, Ohio in August (SSD, PS, TWD, FWD, MINI) will require a free-entry contract, a top-15 point standings position, or invitations by the respective promoters.

Competitors who are interested in pulling in Two Wheel Drive at Farley must register or upgrade their vehicles’ registration level to GN by noon on Monday, June 3, at which time Farley event entry will close.
